Fascial Manipulation

What is it?

Fascial Manipulation is a hands-on soft tissue technique developed 40 years ago by a Physiotherapist in Italy called Luigi Stecco. He, his children (both medical specialists) and other scientists have conducted lots of studies showing the connection between muscles and fascia and how they generate tension to transmit loads throughout the body.

Fascia is soft connective tissue connecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, organs and bones together. It is made up of collagen, elastic fibres and a chemical substance that allows muscles to slide and glide over each other during muscle contractions. If muscles become overworked, the fascia surrounding the muscles get stuck together creating pain and movement dysfunction.

The goal of Fascial Manipulation is to treat the source of pain rather than the site of pain. This is done by generating heat in densified fascia along a specified line of painful movements thus provoking an inflammatory response. The heat created restores the slide and gliding of the fascia, reducing tension and pulling throughout the whole fascial line. The result is reduced pain and an improvement in movement patterns. FM works for people with any kind of muscular pain, headaches/migraines, bursitis, tendonitis and other internal dysfunctions.
